Charter Communications Technology and Engineering Center

$30 M | 100,000 SF

Cator, Ruma & Associates was selected to provide the mechanical, electrical, and technology design and contract administration for the 100,000-square-foot Charter Technology and Engineering Center and all associated infrastructure and administrative support space.

  • Includes 6 MW computer lab
  • Fast-track project

The project included a 25,000-square-foot computer lab. The facility supports 6 MW of lab equipment. This was a fast track project requiring early design packages and pre-purchase packages for equipment.

Built in two phases about two years apart, the electrical service consists of two (2) separate systems, each with a utility transformer, paralleled UPS systems, and paralleled diesel generator systems.

The high volume 30-foot structure, typical of manufacturing space, provided great opportunity and challenges for the mechanical and electrical systems throughout focusing on comfort, lighting and aesthetic.

This high volume space also afforded the opportunity to add a 10,000-square-foot mezzanine for additional office space after the original construction was completed to accommodate Charter Communications’ growing staff.

The data center was designed to be built modularly to reduce the initial capacity to meet their needs and budget, then scaled up over the next two years.

Unique mechanical systems included a pumped refrigerant economizer for the computer room air conditioning units serving the data center and lab. This allows using a refrigerant pump in lieu of compressors during cool outside air temperature conditions for significant reduction in power consumption.

Additionally, heat recovery from the hot isle containment of the laboratory was utilized to preheat the outside air for the office space. The electrical and cooling capacity within the data center was increased in phases and eventually quadrupled.
