Cator, Ruma & Associates was selected to provide the Mechanical and Electrical design for the expansion/remodel of inpatient services at Boulder Community Hospital’s Foothills Campus.

The project consisted of two separate additions to the existing hospital. The north addition was three stories and houses inpatient beds and the intensive care unit. The north addition also included a basement level for staff parking.

The east addition, also three stories, was an expansion of emergency and imaging services on the first floor, surgery and cath lab expansion on the second floor, and women and children’s services on the third floor. The total square footage of new construction is approximately 100,000 square feet.

In addition, the project scope included the remodel of 30,000-40,000 square feet of the existing space as well as approximately 8,700 square feet of existing basement level parking square footage which was converted to hospital support space.

The existing boiler plant consisted of two 400 BHP fire tube boilers. This project added a third boiler, a 250 BHP fire tube boiler. This boiler is slightly smaller, providing a summer boiler. Stack economizers to all three boilers were also added. The economizers transfer heat from the boiler flue gas to the boiler feedwater. The economizers were added as an energy savings measure.

Equipment modifications in the Central Utility Plant were also part of the project.
