$24.4 M | 67,785 SF

Four-story community facility and residence building that borders the university’s track and football field.

  • Sustainable systems including campus heating water loop fed by a geothermal well
  • Unique curvature and glass-walled common spaces provide viewing on athletic events

Cator, Ruma & Associates provided the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design for a unique addition on the campus of Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. The new four-story building, consisting of community facilities and student residences, was built alongside the existing college track and football field. The community facilities side includes the stadium grandstands and houses game-day locker rooms and concession stands on the main level. The upper floors include an officials and press box, and a two-story multi-use space is planned that includes a restaurant and dining area overlooking the field.

The residential portion of the building curves along the athletic field’s end zone and contains four-bedroom apartments complete with kitchen and living spaces. The curvature of the building, combined with glass-walled common spaces and outdoor balconies overlooking the field, provide prime viewing of athletic events.

Site modifications complemented the attraction of the new stadium building, providing new parking for the residents and for events, and a new plaza and landscape green. Site lighting provides a secure nighttime environment and enhance building features.

The Adams State University was motivated to use sustainable energy options and a campus heating water loop fed by a geothermal well. The loop supplies heating water to campus buildings and is backed up by condensing boilers. Taking advantage of the geothermal heating and incorporating additional energy saving design features, such as energy efficient lighting and automatic lighting control, enhances the university’s bold sustainability efforts.
