University of Colorado –
Library and Communication Technology Expansion

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Estimated Construction Cost:  $20,100,000

Cator, Ruma & Associates was selected to provide mechanical and electrical system design for the Library and Communication Technology  Expansion Project at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Campus. Included with the new Library space are Student Computer Work Rooms, television/video studio with control room, and a 2,500 SF Computer Machine Room with access flooring.

Lighting systems for the building are provided mostly with fluorescent T-8 lamps with recessed parabolics for library stack areas and general areas. Direct/ indirect pendant lighting with linear fluorescent lamps are specified for office, work study and computer areas. The majority of the building lighting is controlled by low voltage relays. This system allows the interior lights to be on a timed schedule appropriate for the building and allows the exterior lighting to be controlled via an astronomical time clock. Local override switches are provided in staff offices and restrooms. Local switching downstream of the relay is provided in small study rooms. The three video conference rooms have special lighting for the video camera requirements. Asymmetric luminaires provide appropriate vertical foot-candles on the camera subjects. Preset dimming scenes allow the room lighting to change dramatically and quickly with predictable results.

Cator, Ruma & Associates was honored with the Edwin F. Guth Section Award for Interior Lighting Design in the International Illumination Design Competition for 2002 conducted by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America Rocky Mountain Section for their design of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Library and Technology Expansion.
