University of Colorado Health Sciences Center -
Lazzara Center for Oral and Facial Health
Aurora, Colorado
Estimated
Construction Cost: $20,800,000
The Lazzara Center for Oral and
Facial Health is a new three-story facility located on the University of
Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) Fitzsimons Campus. The Center houses 155
dental chairs. Fifty dental simulation stations enable students to train on
computerized mannequins. Laboratories are used for teaching and manufacturer of
dentures and other prostheses.
UCHSC's participation in Xcel Energy's Energy Design
Assistance program is expected to result in a significant rebate to the Owner.
The overall building energy costs are expected to be 27.5% lower than the code
minimum baseline. This was achieved by: Lighting controls; low lighting power
densities; variable frequency drives on all motors; CO2 demand side
ventilation controls; Low-E insulating glass with external shading on windows;
and improved insulation.
Plumbing systems were deigned for safety and
conservation: NFPA 99 medical gas distribution for oxygen, air and nitrous
oxide; pure water distribution to chairs with silver ion antibacterial water
treatment; and process water-cooled vacuum pumps conserve domestic water.
Cator,
Ruma & Associates
received a Merit Award from the American
Council of Engineering Companies for their design of this project in the 2006
Engineering Excellence competition.
We also received the 2006
Edwin F. Guth Section and Regional Awards in the International
Illumination Design Competition from the Illuminating Engineering Society of
North America, Rocky Mountain Section for interior lighting design services.
