Colorado College - Russel T. Tutt Science Center
Colorado Springs, Colorado
Estimated Construction Cost:
$12,000,000
Cator, Ruma & Associates
was selected to provide mechanical and electrical engineering design for the
Russell T. Tutt Science Center at the Colorado College. The Center is a
three-story 50,000 square foot classroom, office and science laboratory, which
includes computer labs, chemical (wet) labs, animal labs, lecture halls and
conference centers. High performance glass was used. A LEEDTM
certification was granted.
General office and
classroom spaces are equipped with operable windows. The heating, ventilating
and air conditioning (HVAC) control system is interlocked with the windows to
disable the HVAC system when the windows are open, allowing for natural
ventilation.
The building's
mechanical, plumbing and lighting systems were designed as a learning tool for
students to enhance their knowledge and study energy consumption and
conservation methods. A state-of-the-art energy management system and lighting
control system was designed and integrated with the Campus' main computer
system. Digital monitoring of the various systems will be accessible from any
computer station and will show the energy consumption for each individual
system, plus energy consumption of the building as a whole.
Cator, Ruma & Associates
received a Merit Award from the American
Council of Engineering Companies for their design of this project in the 2004
Engineering Excellence competition.
This project
also received First Place in the ASHRAE Region IX 2003/2004 Technology
Competition.
- A LEEDTM
Certified rating was received for the Tutt
Science Center on February 25, 2005 with 26 points.
- The
Center is the first LEEDTM certified building in Colorado Springs.
- It is
the fourth building in the State of Colorado to be certified under version
2.0.
